My Strange In Eclipse Land Post
Yesterday I posted a post comparing my higher rss/atom read counts than EclipseZone at Dzone titled Strange in Eclipse Land. I received the highest amount of reads among both IBM employees and Eclipse Foundation than I have received in a while.
I do not know what it means as the party line at Eclipse Foundation is that while they want the Eclipse community portion to grow at EclipseZone at Dzone they have no control over Dzone.

Why Facebook is A Portal and Portlets not
Ever wonder why Facebook can act as a portal and be on multiple sites at once? There are two components.
One is the iFrame that magic that allows Facebook to display apps that have pages from another site. The other component is server styled rendering engine that receives all requests and sends back pages.
The Portlet container on the other hand has none of this structure and thus you cannot take a Portlet server and try and morph it into a portal that servers both portlets and multiple site servlet apps as one platform, its not made for that purpose. A great deal of the 20,000 hours Facebook development team spent in 2004 were spent on coming up with this model.

StartUp Engineering Social Platforms in Chicago
Sometimes no tech people fail to grasp the exact complications of developing a social network platform. And certainly the mythical project posts on craigslist.org with individuals wanting a facebook or linkedin clone complete din one month by one developer for all of $500 does not help.
Usually to get 10% of features of a platform you see somewhere else but are attempting to re-invent for a new market takes the same amount of hours as the user usable original prototype of the platform you are attempting to copy. In the social network platform case its an average of 20,000 hours to get that first user usable prototype. The person with the money does not make the rules here, as it has to do what is technically feasible using the development tools, processes, and computer language frameworks at hand at this moment.
Its not possible to reduce the amount of development hours because the person in charge usually is comparing 10% of the features of the mature social network platform to original prototype and they are not the same. And since most budding Social Network Platform Start Ups want their own and not to use someone's apis a drastic expectations shift has to happen for those types of projects to be successful.
One of the expectations that has to change is that the prototype will be able to be deployed to multiple websites as single applications. Facebook can does this because it has a mature api set that took more than the original 20,000 hours to complete.
The only solution if you are a Chicago Start Up seeking to build a Social Network Platform is to drop all those multiple domains that you might have and accept that the user usable prototype that you want to show investor sis going to take one full year to develop. Anything less or short of that is making a a foolish adventure that fails evry time.

It always turn out to fail each time, but no one is bright enough to listen to that experience that they are paying for at that moment.

In my trials of doc windowing systems for Ubuntu I came across the best one, cairo-doc. You can see some current screen shots at my tumblr blog. Very neat and new features are coming out in late May. best part it doe snot use video card 3d effect so works in VMWare and VirtualBox Guest Hosts.
EthicalProblemIN EclipseCommunity
I a have bit of problem here with this Converting a Java Project to a Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse article at EclipseZone at Dzone.com. As you can see it was 'composed' from an original article by GreatWebbGuy.
In publishing it is a common practice to give the title co-author to the original article author if content is 50% copied from the original article. This article certainly qualifies. Some background, all Dzone.com articles go through some review process an first post articles by any Dzone contributor get the most examination.
Are you to disturbed by this? Ma I imaging things? How does this bode positively on the Eclipse community? Okay, lets give a reasonable bow to doubt. What if the system Dzone uses does not allow to do such things? All the more reason to put an introductory sentence at the beginning stating who the co-author is nd their link to the original article.
I can state that the Eclipse Foundation does read my Eclipse posts, so if you feel strongly about this I would urge you put your comments in the comment box below.

THe best do c for VirtualBox since we cannot have 3d effects seems to be Cairo-Doc, see screenshot. I had to turnoff auto-hide.
SimDoc Trick
So for whatever reason you cannot run AWN but want that neat effect of doc on top of app window by using SimDoc. There is a way. Drag SimDOc to top gnome panel. Minimize and resize every app that you will ever run. Now you have that AWN effect without running AWN. The screenshot is in my flickr stream, link to the right.
UbuntuSimDoc VirtualBox
The window navigator doc that works with VirtualBox is SimDoc which is in the universal part of Ubuntu. Once you get everything added and set up it to start on start up than you can delete the bottom gnome panel. You can see how I started in my flickr stream to the right.
Context at DZone
What is missing at Dzone that we had before the redesign is not in of itself the community discussion. But, that community discussion due to the experienced people adding their voices added context to every article at JavaLobby, EclipseZone, and etc. For example, any news article about JVM optimization such as this oneusually brought in voices of experience JVM optimization developers.
Its not he quality of articles that has changed its the quality of community voices putting the article in context that is evidently missing.

Why do start ups insist that cross context platforms can be completed despite evidence in maturing web programming industry over the past 13 years that it cannot? It underlies the basic problem when you hire basic programmers when a basic architect is needed.

When you first read this post from TechCrunch you might not get the full depth of the facebook move. What it means is that any company can do a portal for their workers right on top of the facebook platform. Its big STUFF, so big that some of us walked out on wrong business portal implementations because we knew that this facebook move was coming!

I am wondering how long a Social Chicago StartUP takes beyond the projected launch date to realize that you cannot do a web platform cross context. Now its is different to write some web2 apis to connect two platforms cross context. But the start up did not want to change and diversify into 2 platforms or other solutions to get around the cross context issues.
Of course the other solution is to change both the business plan and tech implementation to avoid cross context.

A prototype of a Chicago StartUp was suppose to be up today. That is about all I can state other than when hiring web app programmers avoid those who do not know the freaking difference between the programming modes of a portal and a platform server multiple sites. Web apps are designed to avoid cross context communication and modes for several reasons. They are kind of important reaons.

Something is happening folks. and no I am not talking about the Sun Microsystems goof ups of sending out the ustream.tv broadcast urls after the show has already ended via twitter. A shift is happening.

A Mahalo Search Experiment
If you assume that your friends on FriendFeed an Twitter are Mahalo style editors, how would you get that data via search so that it could be in a FrindFeed/Twitter client?
Both FriendFeed and Twitter apis have access limits that would hamper searches. But, what if you did not have to go through the apis? Than you could do much searching as you desired.
Search via using the site google operator only gives accurate data if you click on a cache page link see Indiana Earthquake on FriendFeed and Indiana Earthquake on Twitter.
However, you could bootstrap using Yahoo Pipes if you settled for only taking say a snapshot of the feeds daily or however recent the user might want. While getting FriendFeed individual feeds is simple such as my seesmic search on my own feed, it would take some programming to get a yahoo pipe that could transverse the OPML format provided by FriendFeed and than search each feed of your friends.
Twitter is somewhat easier to get the friend feed as in the help doc here. Which means a less dense Yahoo pipe to construct.
This would be a neat mashup to do and integrate in with a FriendFeed/Twitter client.

I am debating whether or not to do a ustream.tv show called StartUp Engineering. If I were to do it I think I should start a star t up on the side that I can talk about. If I did start the show it would have to be on weekends so that those in start up could participate.

My readers know that I am very good technology predictor or trend screamer and thus this post title, InfoQ if really interested I listen to cash to pay my living expenses. Thus, what is the one or most important trend that will not be covered at JavaOne that in fact should be covered.
Scripting on the Java Virtual Machine has gotten 'play' before in past years. We have of course JSR 223 and the scripting project at java.net, jsr 292 adding anew JV instruction called invokedynamic and etc. sound s like a far away event that we will not see for awhile, right?
What if I were to tell you that a major group of competitors to the ruby on Rails frameworks were going to be on the JVM in python running at production stable levels this year? Okay, lets go through all the signs.
According to this InfoQ article we have had a new Python compiler 2.5 since September 2007. We have the Python 2.5 release. Jython roadmap states next Jython release(2.5) is targeted for Python2.5. It has the sated goal of getting Django, TurboGears, Twisted(Actually, I mean Woven on top of Twisted), and Pylons MVC web frameworks running on Jython 2.5 within the JVM.
Jython's team progress as of April 2008(per progress report here):
Production release of Jython is up to 2.2
Jython source code is up to CPython 2.3 and they are now transitioning to CPython 2.5
Parser Milestone 1 finished by javaOne 2008

Where have the Eclispezone and javaLobby communities gone to?
Since not really visiting EclipseZone and javaLobby past its new incarnations you may be wondering where those communities moved to. I have found that you can find the members for those communities on FriendFeed and Twitter. I was surprised by the number of folks that I have conversed with over the years as a JavaLobby and EclipseZone member that are on both services.

Why I am not At EclipseZone
This is not a blame fest or pointing finger fest. Its just an explanation of why I have had not visited EclipseZone since February 2008 and its from my own perspective. First, I have been a member of javaLobby for awhile and I was one of the first Eclipsezone members when it was not with Dzone and Javalobby.
For me it was attraction of articles combined with quality discussion among both individuals and industry players that kept me coming back daily. With the current changes there is no community discussion or community voice heard and that lack of community voice shows in the quality of articles currently being 'churned out'.
If we are to learn anything from the lessons of social media it is that no one company or groups of companies can act as 'King Maker' because it is the community that say what they like and if it is not changed they find other places to go to get their community developer fix.
I mourn the old sites of javaLobby and Eclipsezone where the sens of developer community was always there and now its gone never to return, very sad. I do not like it all, its not fun and it is not a nice feeling at all. One word describes it, FAIL.
SIDE NOTE: I wish it was different. I wish my concerns about EclispeZone were taken to heart before the new changes.
StartUp Engineering-Marketing
One of the problems I had in certain start up in Chicago that I was involved with is getting the founders to understand marketing. They held the old world belief that marketing to those who already had an interest was correct or marketing to those who already have a connection was correct.
The problem is that does not produce viable numbers of users of a social platform in order to reach profitability. Fpr instance if I have web 2.0 platform as an equity exchange than my marketing focus should on those in equity that are not using my product. The steady incremental improvement sin product already market to those using the platform.
While certainly, the design an functionality of the UI of the platform attempts to keep new users of the platform, other details in other areas serve to also attract new users. What I am trying to say is that part of the platform or product story is how the execution and implementation of the start up plan tells a story of why its important to use this platform for potential users.
For example, lets look at Mahalo.com. By making the choice of leasing and not building a data center Mahalo.com was able to put those money resource towards the human powered search editing that so many new users use at this time. But, notice that the end result in terms of product and platform is emphasized in user terms and not infrastructure terms.
We do not care about the 100 connections the founder has. We care about those thousands and millions of connections that we have to get beyond what the founder has. It is a big viewpoint shift. If you are already involved in somewhat telling a story through blogging and etc you might already be aware and using the process; not that bloggers have some exclusivity on this process.

Why do non technical start up founders insist that you can mix portals into a single platform that spans portals and multi-sites as one platform with one code base? Yes, that was the nightmare the last 4 months with some developers not spotting the problem also in the mix. YUCK!

Everyone gets this wrong so listen the hell up! Its the interactive ads via social cues that will get traction. For example a game in facebook that interactively advertises a product and encourages you buy that product to earn points in the game.
The traditional web ads will not get play unless they are interactively include dint he social network application. For a good example, look at how MobWars uses earning extra point sot advertise sponsors.

As many of you know the implementation change did not go through and I had to walk away from a start up. I do have a start up project interview tomorrow. I can say its putting some interesting applications on facebook with some better working conditions.
Lucky I was playing around building facebook thrift and thrudb libraries from source as I will end up using them I think. Am I still considering doing a weekly vlog cast using ustream or seesmic ro the combination? Yes, I am considering ti but want the new project/gig in place before I commit to that at this time.
Building Sources on Ubuntu
If you view my flickr stream, you will see that I have been building sources lately. it snto any more difficult on Ubuntu as other Linux or Unix OSes.
Those that are new to Linux or Unix the catch you need to watch out for is that when they state a library dependency they mean you have apt-get install two parts. The lib itself and the -dev par that has the headers both have to be apt-get install obtained.

The only tip I have to add to this howto is that due to the change of locations of libjvm.so between sun jdk6 and openjdk6 you may want to start with the sun java 6 first.

Ubuntu and WINE
I am very surprised. WINE and Ubuntu really work well together, nice! One nice thing about Ubuntu as well in 8.0.4 is that you can skip VirtualBox and install in the Windows partition and keep windows but boot into Ubuntu. That is something for latter when I have time.

VirtualBox Tip for Host Windows OS
If you are running VirtualBox on top of windows you may have notice an error when the COM server that VirtualBox creates cannot get the mouse events via the Guest Additions that you installed into the Guest OS. The simple solution 9is to increase your video memory form the default 8 Megs to between 21 Megs and 32 Megs. runs for days and weeks without errrors once you have made that change.
