University of Surrey and Guilfest announce formal association The University of Surrey is pleased to announce that it has entered into a formal association with Guilfest 2008. This association continues the University’s long involvement with the performance of live music in the region and highlights the pioneering work of the University’s Department of Music and Sound Recording. Viral Therapy of Cancer In the last decade there has been an explosion of interest in using viruses as treatments for cancer. This has been as a result of increased understanding on the molecular basis of cancer, and how some of the cancer-associated cell processes can be targeted by naturally occurring or genetically manipulated viruses. From early prototype gene therapy models, certain viruses are undergoing formal evaluation in clinical trials, both as single agents and in combination with standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Some of these trials are ongoing at the University of Surrey. Burma aid directed by satellite As the death toll in Burma grows following Cyclone Nargis, so the continuing devastation and flooding caused is recorded by UK-based satellite imaging company DMCii Ltd. Satellite images are being used by the United Nation's UNOSAT to detect floodwater and to estimate the likely impact on villages and townships. The images taken from space are compared with those recorded prior to the cyclone in order to predict the spread of post-disaster floodwaters. Invensys Process Systems (IPS) has announced that the Swedish bio-refinery SunPine AB, will use Invensys SimSci-Esscor’s PRO/II simulation software for modeling a new biodiesel refining operation in Piteå, Sweden. The new plant, which is a member of the Solander Science park biofuels collaboration, converts crude biooil byproducts of pine pulping into second-generation biodiesel for shipment to diesel refining facilities.
