Branding Stepping

In part two of the discussion of Branding Stepping, I am continuing the explanation of the importance of a steppers website, and it's role in branding. This article deals with the cursory information which I have compiled through experience and the various Search Engine Optimization (SEO) courses I have taken through the years. It is by no means a source for all things related to branding, or web sites. I feel each web site has it's individual strengths and weaknesses and there is no single answer for all. Like most of my columns, it's based on my take on things. My goal in this column is to help steppers expand their range of influence in the larger arena. Knowledge is power.
Optimizing your web site for the search engines is important in one respect. It's how people on the web find your site. It doesn't matter how usable, or how pretty your site is if new visitors can't find it. The actual content on your website is extremely important (Great marketers find lots of ways to spread their message beyond using just the web). If your website is less than two years old it's a matter of education and information sharing which should be the priority to establish your site as an "authority" site (presenting content that's good for your visitors, not marketing fluff that pounds your...  To continue reading Click Here

Branding Stepping

I've talked about product branding at length in this column before. But I wonder how good the branding really is outside the Steppers community. It looks like many people have taken much of what I've had to say to heart inside the steppers community. There appears to be a heightened awareness on the part of steppers as to who does what and when. Hopefully SteppersUSA has had a hand in that effect. Certain promoters and artist representatives from outside the steppers community see this growing audience and are actively marketing to us. Let's take You Tube and Google advertising for example. The reason I chose these particular web advertising giants is multi-fold... I've used them in examples before, and the results are easy to illustrate. If you are the average visitor (who isn't part of the steppers community) to Google and you do a search for things to do in (insert your city), and see if stepping comes up in the first five pages of results. Work Work Work

Most people say thank goodness for the weekend, and I'd love to say the same, but my "weekend" never really materializes. at least if I want to eat. One project blends into the next. I just finished rebuilding Doc's (Atlanta) website www.stepperschoice.com over the last couple of days. There's still things to add, but you learn as a webmaster, to get it built, then wait for the owner to send the stuff they need. In the meanwhile I have to keep moving. So I pop a little more stuff on www.clubdelegance.com, www.learn2step.com, and tweak things on www.united2dance.com. The 32 Count

The deeper I get into the history of steppin, the more I realize how little the people around me really know about the dance. A few days ago I got an email from fellow webmaster, Dan Land stating exactly what I've been saying in steppers class for years about "the count".  Those who converse with me in class will find this extremely familiar, even though they are not my words;
"If we recall the true history of steppin and boppin, we find that most so called old skoolers were taught the basics of this dance through rhythm, a aunt, uncle, mother, father, sister, brother, friend, etc. passed the rhythm down through generations, not the count. If I change the 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8 to Markie Bee Markie, Markie Bee Markie, Markie Bee or da da da, da da da , da da, or cha cha cha, cha cha cha, cha cha. DJ of the Week
DJ Markey G is our DJ of the Week. Most Steppers know the song "The man" by Markey G In Chicago this DJ is known for his creativity. His songs have been given air play on the radio. He has worked as a DJ since he was 15. He's played the wedding and party circuit, as well as mixed for house sets. He writes, produces and markets his music without the benefit of the backing of any record labels.

His latest offering is called, "Sprinkle Your Feet" which he just released to the steppers community. Many Steppers, as well as DJ's are mentioned in this new mix. Click Here To Listen
